One Wednesday night, my friend Haleigh and I went to the
preview of the annual Fringe Festival. It was the most bohemian place I have
ever been. You want to talk about the artist district? This was it. It was
beautiful, but not in the typical sense of the word, but in the peaceful,
happy, and satisfied form of the word. The people there were so happy to be doing
what they love without having to break their messages in order to make their
works a “big hit”. Haleigh and I saw a show called Blue Book which gave us inside look to the history of Storyville,
the prostitution district of New Orleans, which is now gone. Lulu White, being
the woman who pretty much led the district, she was a perfect example of how
people conform to fit certain time periods. You see, Lulu was an octoroon, but
when that wasn’t popular, she said she was all black or all white or Spanish,
anything to get customers and get the police off her back. In the end
Storyville was put to rest, hence why it no longer exists. Not many people know
about Storyville, but I really do recommend looking it up; it gave me a better
look on the history of New Orleans and everything it has gone through.
